Dr Stergia Avgoulis

Dr Stergia Avgoulis was born and raised in Sydney. She has been a medical practitioner since 1991, graduating from the University of New South Wales. She completed her psychiatry specialist training in 2000, becoming a Fellow of the Royal Australian New Zealand College of Psychiatrists. She also completed Advanced Training in Old Age Psychiatry to become a Member of RANZCP Faculty of Old Age Psychiatry.

Dr Avgoulis worked as a Senior Staff Specialist in Old Age Psychiatry for 14 years in the Canterbury community catchment. The settings included outpatient clinics, home visits, residential care and consultation- liaison psychiatry for geriatric medicine at Canterbury hospital. As well as providing care for her older patients with dementia, mental illness or both, Dr Avgoulis also worked with families, carers and residential care staff in supporting their carer roles.

In private practice, Dr Avgoulis worked in general adult and aged care psychiatry for 10 years in Annandale. As well as medication management, she provided psychotherapy in the form of Cognitive Behaviour Therapy, Psychodynamic psychotherapy and Insight-oriented psychotherapy. She also worked with individuals and families in supporting their carer roles, providing grief therapy and family therapy.

Dr Avgoulis is bilingual in Greek. She has been able to provide culturally-specific psychiatric care to Greek-speaking patients and their families in both public and private sectors. She finds this work rewarding and it contributes greatly to her interest in transcultural psychiatry.

In 2015, Dr Avgoulis returned to working in private practice, joining Wellview Consulting Rooms, and is looking forward to providing psychiatric care with an empathic, holistic approach to both general adult and aged care patients.
