Wellview – Memory and Cognitive Disorders Clinic

Wellview – Memory and Cognitive Disorders Clinic

Assessment and Diagnosis

Your initial assessment will include a comprehensive clinical interview by an accredited Psychiatrist who has specialised training and expertise in assessing memory and other cognitive problems. This assessment includes obtaining a history of your cognitive difficulties as well as information about your physical health. Our Memory Specialist will assess your thinking functions and will arrange investigations to assist us to reach a diagnosis of your difficulties. We ask that some routine blood tests are completed prior to your attendance to expedite your assessment. You may also need a brain scan which we will arrange if necessary. Our Memory Specialist will also need to speak to one of your family members to obtain background information about your memory difficulties.

Following your comprehensive assessment you will receive a comprehensive typed report which will outline the specialist’s recommendations for the management of your cognitive difficulties. You may choose to attend for follow up visits in order to be prescribed cognitive enhancing medication (memory pills) as well to receive information about non-drug interventions that will assist. Our Memory Specialist may recommend that you have a comprehensive neuropsychological assessment by one of our Clinical Neuropsychologists. This assessment is on a private pay basis and there is no Medicare rebate for this service. Your health insurance may provide a rebate. Please check with your health insurer if this service is recommended.

You (and your family if you wish) will be offered detailed feedback regarding the results of our assessments and an understandable explanation of your diagnosis and treatment plan. Because of our extensive experience with patients with dementia and other cognitive disorders we are very sensitive to the needs of patients and families in this important area. All patients attending Wellview’s Memory and Cognitive Disorders Clinic require a GP referral.
